Effective Business Growth: Why Word of Mouth Isn’t Enough

Imagine a football team entering the field without a clear game plan. They are bound to lose. In the same way, a business without a clear business growth strategy is destined to fail. My name is Rajiv Tal Raja, and I’ve worked with thousands of businesses to help owners build companies that can grow without them. When I ask small and medium business owners about how they generate new customer inquiries, the answer I often hear is that they rely on word-of-mouth.

Why Word of Mouth Is Not a Business Growth Strategy

Let’s get one thing straight: word-of-mouth is not a business growth strategy. At best, it’s luck and chance. Think about it—there’s no science, no mechanism to control the number of referrals you get through word-of-mouth in a week or a month. This lack of control means that you have no real control over the sales targets you set for your business’s growth.

The Risk of Relying on Karma Marketing

Word-of-mouth is what I call “Karma Marketing.” When you’ve done good deeds, it pays you back. People recommend your services and products to others. But what happens when your karma runs out? If you’re relying solely on word-of-mouth, then all you have left is hope and prayer. You can’t achieve your business growth goals if you don’t have a solid strategy in place.

Proactive and Consistent Efforts:

If you rely on word-of-mouth to generate business, you’ll face issues like inconsistent sales and cash flows. Some months will be up, and others will be down, with no way to control it. This is why I always advise entrepreneurs to market proactively and consistently. When you market proactively and consistently, you control the number of leads you generate in a week or a month, allowing you to meet your goals.

Conclusion: Word of Mouth is a Suicide Strategy for Business Growth

If you want your sales to be consistent, the first step is to understand and accept that word-of-mouth is not a business growth strategy. It’s a suicide strategy for your business’s growth.
